Choosing The Right Windows For Your Home

Being a homeowner, you understand there are countless decisions to make on a daily basis. Some of these decisions are minor in the grand scheme of things. Some choices will have a dramatic impact not only on how your home looks, but how your home performs. Not only that, but consideration needs to be given on how your house would look to potential buyers when you decide to sell your home. This is certainly how purchasing new windows can be categorized; it is a process that must be taken seriously in order to ensure that this considerable investment you are making is truly impacting your home in a positive way.

Here is how you know you are choosing the right windows for your home:

Match Your Home’s Style

When you are replacing your home’s windows, you not only want them to function properly, but you want them to enhance the appearance of your home! That is why it’s so important to have your window choice coincide with the style of your house. While a modern, mid-century modern style house may look better with casement (tall, rectangular) windows, the look of a more traditional or colonial home would look best with double-hung windows.

One popular option today is to add color to the exterior of the windows. While white is still the most prevalent exterior window color; tan, black and bronze are becoming more popular. Some homeowners even opt for black or bronze on the interior of their windows.

Study the Numbers

If you are in the market for windows, there are certain values you need to be aware of in order to make sure your windows will control climate and be energy efficient. It’s important to pay attention to the U-Value, the number of the solar heat gain coefficient, and the visible transmittance. The lower the U-value number, the better the window is at keeping in heat. The lower the solar heat gain coefficient, the better the window will block unwanted heat from the sun. And a high visible transmittance number will tell you that the window will let in a great deal of light.

Consider Your Climate

Consumer Report recommends those that are in the market for new windows pay close attention to the climate in which they live. Since our homes in the Midwest are more often exposed to cold exterior temperatures versus warm exterior temperatures, purchasing windows that have lower U-Values and lower air infiltration will answer those climate needs. After all, no one wants to feel that frigid blizzard while they’re sitting in their living room; they simply want to be protected from it! Orientation of your house or exposure to the sun can determine what glass characteristics you need to consider. Southern or western exposures may require lower U-value glass while on a northern exposure you may want more light transmittance.

Installation Process

Equally as important as the window itself is the process in which your new windows are installed in your home. Quality fasteners, insulation, caulks and sealants are important components in your home’s exterior wall construction. The best window, installed improperly will function poorly; potentially causing additional damage to your home’s structure.
