Outdoor Living Trends and Backyard Configurations for 2023

Summer is closer than you think, and if we’ve learned anything from the past three years, it’s how much of those warm weather months we spend in our homes. Because of this, outdoor living areas have become a HUGE focus for people decorating or designing their homes. If you have a patio, porch, or garden, or if you’re looking to renovate and add an outdoor living area, you’ll want to look at some of the most beautiful trends and tips for outdoor living this year!

Look at these outdoor living trends and backyard configurations for 2023:

  • Indoor/Outdoor Space. More people are adding indoor-outdoor merged spaces to their homes to get the natural, fresh air of the outdoors with the comforts of your home. Think folding glass doors that seamlessly open the house to your outdoor space, creating a natural flow from the inside to the outside, an enclosed veranda, or even a partially covered garden. These are wonderful ways to add a comfortable and functional yet luxurious feeling space to your home!

  • Natural Stone. Sustainability in interior design is one of the biggest trends of the past few years, and using natural materials has contributed to this trend. Natural stone is one of the most popular materials used– try adding it to patio floors, outdoor chimneys or ovens, or even create a natural stone pathway to add warmth to a solid, large lawn. Granite, sandstone, and limestone are great options for outdoor stonework.

  • Plants. Add more plants to patios, terraces, and balconies for more greenery. It will create a genuinely ethereal feeling, particularly with leafy greens or vine-y flowers and plants. You can also use plants creatively to add privacy to your outdoor living space— create plant walls for privacy by adding pergolas, trellises, plant shelves, or hanging plants.

  • Outdoor Furniture. Outdoor furniture is the ultimate way to create an outdoor lounge space where you can entertain large groups. Try dining sets or bistro sets for patios to eat outdoor meals or conversation sets with lounge chairs and comfortable sofas or sectionals for lots of seating for parties or relaxation. Add umbrellas for extra shade, string lights for a beautiful touch of light at night, or even a tasteful outdoor rug to add warmth and interest to a patio or terrace floor.

  • Firepits. Speaking of furniture, why not add a firepit? In the summer months, there’s nothing people love more than a bonfire to gather around and visit with loved ones, make smores, or enjoy the woodsy aesthetic. It’s also a fantastic way to keep away some pesky summer mosquitoes!
