While many consider this one of the most worthwhile projects you can do, it can also be an extensive and stressful project, especially if you need help figuring out where to start. Luckily, with some guidance and a thought-out plan, painting your house can be an approachable and even fun process!
Here's a quick, step-by-step guide on the process of painting your house:
Plan. First thing first, make a painting plan. Figure out areas that need to be painted, such as the walls, trim and detail work. It is also a good time to pick the paint colors and where the paint will go (for example, if you want a different color trim for the windows). You can also decide whether to paint the entire house or specific parts.
Fix and Repair. Before you get to painting, you'll need to fix and repair any exterior issues that may affect the final look of the paint. Scrape any crumbling or flaking paint, caulk, and patch around windows, and use a pressure washer to remove any dirt and debris collected on top of the paint over time. Remove anything you don't want to be painted, like lights, mailboxes, security cameras, and other decorations, to prepare the house for painting.
Prime. Prime before you paint so that the paint has a smooth surface, especially if the house's exterior is in poor condition or if you're painting on top of a porous material like wood. And make sure you're getting the correct primer for the material you're working with.
Paint. Start painting! Put on some protective gear and use a dry roller or a paint sprayer to cover larger parts of the house and a smaller brush to paint the trim by hand. You'll want at least two coats of paint throughout the entire house.
Finish! Return items that you removed to their places and dispose of any drop cloths you had lying around. In addition, save any leftover paint in case you need to touch up any spots in the future.
